The 13th SAESM will be held in Delhi from 22 December, 2016 to 27 December, 2016 and will be hosted by Ramjas College, University of Delhi. The theme of the conference this year will be “Enhancing Prosperity in South Asia through Trade”. The conference will seek to engage with young Economics scholars of the region to appraise them and also learn from their views and analysis where we are headed.

The conference will have the following three competitions:

  1. Paper Presentation – Based on the theme of the conference – The best paper of the conference wins the highly prestigious “Mahbub ul Haq and Amartya Sen Best Research Paper Award”.
  2. Budding Economist of South Asia – The winner shall be selected through a series of tests, presentations and interviews by eminent economists.
  3. Intercountry Economics Quiz – Anything and everything that falls under the ambit of Economics could be asked and the smartest and the fastest team walks away with the best quizzing team prize.

In organizing the first SAESM (2004), it was planned that a study retreat be conceptualized where students of the region can carry on the process of sharing intellectual space through discussions and deliberation on issues which are important for the region and not necessarily in a competitive spirit, which underlies the academic profile of the conference. Further, it was thought that it would serve as a learning process of the region, if the host country showcases some of its culture and heritage to these young minds. In this regard, a retreat to the culturally rich city of Agra has been decided where participants will be visiting the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, among other places to showcase the Mughal period of the South Asian history.

In addition to the above, the conference will have a few speaker sessions where eminent economists from around the globe and people occupying important positions affecting national and international policies will be invited to speak to the participants primarily on the theme of the conference.
