In organizing the first SAESM (2004), it was planned that a study retreat be conceptualized where students of the region can carry on the process of sharing intellectual space through discussions and deliberation on issues which are important for the region and not necessarily in a competitive spirit, which underlies the academic profile of the conference. Further, it was thought that it would serve as a learning process of the region, if the host country showcases some of its culture and heritage to these young minds.
